Rangetop Burner Caps and Ports
Viking's guide: wipe the caps after each use, and always clean them after a spill-over.
- Manual shut-off valve — installed in the supply line, reachable in a hurry
- Pressure regulator — built into a rangetop; shipped with a gas cooktop to be fitted
- Manifold — the pipe that feeds every valve
- Burner valve — one behind each knob
- Burner — head, cap and ports where the flame forms
In short
On a Viking 5 Series built-in gas rangetop, the maker ties clean burner caps directly to even flames and clean lighting. Caps and ports are owner work with the burner cold. Viking Repair Sammamish reads the flame on every burner before looking further: (425) 610-8986.
Why the cap sets the flame
The cap sits over the ring of ports and shapes the flame. Baked-on spill, a plugged port or a cap slightly off level spoils that shape, and one side burns taller. So the routine starts at the cap.
What the flame tells us afterwards
We read every burner once the parts are clean and seated. Viking’s troubleshooting table lists clogged ports first against a large, distorted or yellow flame; the other causes on that line, wrong gas type and air shutter adjustment, are not owner work. Nor is anything below the burner base.
Smell gas at any point? Stop, touch no switch, get everyone out, and phone 911 or the gas utility once you are clear of the house.
The steps
-
Cold burner, knobs off, grate lifted clear
Let the burner and grate cool, check every knob points to off, and lift the grate away. Viking says to disconnect the power before a thorough clean with water.
-
Cap straight up, washed by hand and dried
Pull the cap straight up. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth for routine soil; a non-abrasive cleanser such as Bon Ami and a soft brush for cooked-on food. Dry it fully. The dishwasher and self-cleaning oven invite rust.
-
Clear a blocked port with a straight pin
Push a straight pin through any plugged port without widening or bending it. Viking rules out a toothpick. Stubborn caps and heads can sit in a sealed zip bag with ammonia to loosen the soil.
-
Seat the head, then the cap, dead level
Arrow on the head toward the back, its two tabs on the outer edge of the base and clear of the igniter, cap level. Refit only dry parts, then light each burner and watch.
Call us when
- The flame is still ragged, lopsided or yellow with clean, level caps
- An igniter keeps sparking after its burner has lit
- A burner sparks but will not catch while its neighbours light
Past that point it is a bench job, not a care job. Viking Repair Sammamish picks up on (425) 610-8986; the visit and diagnosis are $89, taken off the repair if you go ahead.
Asked about this
Can Viking rangetop burner caps go in the dishwasher?
No. Viking's rangetop guide keeps the caps out of both the dishwasher and the self-cleaning oven, because either can leave them rusting. Wash them by hand in warm soapy water, use a non-abrasive cleanser for cooked-on food and dry them fully. Viking Repair Sammamish, (425) 610-8986.
