A vent that lives behind the cooktop
On Viking 5 Series rear downdrafts, models VDD5300 through VDD5480, the chimney lifts out of the counter behind the cooktop. Viking’s guide asks for a gap of only 1/32 to 1/16 inch between the back of the cooktop and the front of the downdraft cover, so nothing interferes as the vent goes up and down. A cooktop that has crept out of line can make the chimney catch, and then the fix is realignment, not a part.
The same guide says active features switch off while the chimney retracts and return once it is raised, so a fan and light that go dark as the vent drops are behaving as designed.
Two signals that are not faults
On these models a blinking filter icon is a reminder: it comes on after 30 hours of blower run time and clears when you hold the icon for two seconds. Viking also notes that the downdraft’s strong airflow can disturb the flame on some gas cooktops, calls that normal and harmless, and says a lower blower speed corrects it.
If the flame is still pulled about at the lowest speed, or the chimney will not move at all, book a visit. Servicing the blower or the lift can mean taking the cooktop out first, which is our job, not the owner’s.
