In short

Finish damage on a Viking cooktop or rangetop can start with a cleaner that suits one surface being used on the next one along. Viking Repair Sammamish, (425) 610-8986, tells a residue from real damage before quoting anything.

Right chemical, wrong surface

Ammonia shows it best. Viking’s rangetop guide suggests a sealed bag of ammonia for stubborn caps and heads, yet bans it from the knobs and panel, where it strips the printing. Dish detergent removes the film cream leaves on glass. Citrus or tomato juice left on stainless discolours it for good.

What we read before we call it damage

We wipe a mark with the correct cleaner before we name it. A film that lifts was residue. Dulled stainless, worn graphics or rusting caps stay; those are parts questions, priced only after we see them.

The steps

  1. Glass-ceramic: cleaning cream only

Cream on a damp paper towel, a single-edged razor for burned-on soil. No dish detergent, steam cleaner, ammonia, oven cleaner or abrasive powder.

  2. Printed panel and knobs: a soapy cloth

Hot, soapy water on a soft cloth, never sprayed at the panel. Ammonia and abrasives can lift the printing; the cooktop guide adds stainless-steel cleaner.

  3. Stainless and the hood canopy: soap first

Then a cleaner made for stainless. No steel wool, no abrasive cloths, no chlorides on the hood, no metal scraper; soften crusts with hot towels, lift them with wood or nylon.

  4. Caps and burner bases: by hand, then dried

Caps are washed by hand with a non-abrasive cleanser such as Bon Ami, never in the dishwasher or self-cleaning oven. No metal tool touches the aluminium base.

Call us when

  • Printing has worn off a knob or the control panel
  • Rust spots show on burner caps after washing
  • A mark on the glass stays after cream and razor

Past that point it is a bench job, not a care job. Viking Repair Sammamish picks up on (425) 610-8986; the visit and diagnosis are $89, taken off the repair if you go ahead.

Asked about this

Is it safe to use oven cleaner on a Viking cooktop?

No. Viking's cooktop guide lists oven cleaner with ammonia, steel wool, cleansers and abrasive powders as things that can permanently damage the cooktop. Glass takes cleaning cream; stainless takes soapy water or a stainless cleaner. Viking Repair Sammamish reads marks that will not lift: (425) 610-8986.

Describe it, then we measure it

Say what the hood, the cooktop or the rangetop is doing and which model it is. We bring the meters to Sammamish and quote nothing until we have read them. $89 for the visit and diagnosis, taken off the repair if you go ahead.
